Kindness, Boundaries, & the Power of Speaking Up

Recently, I found myself in a frustrating situation that turned into something much deeper—a moment of reflection on how we teach ourselves and others what it means to be kind and grounded in self-worth.
There had been a sudden rate increase at a storage facility—nearly $100 more than expected, with no notice given. When we went to ask about it, we were met with defensiveness and a tone that felt unnecessarily sharp. I used a strong word to express my frustration—nothing I regret, but enough to shift the energy in the room. After that, the conversation became uncomfortable. I was talked over, dismissed, and even told to be quiet with a raised hand.
Rather than escalate things further, I stepped out of the situation. I knew my presence might only intensify the tension, and I wanted to show that we don’t always need to fight to be heard—we can choose grace and self-respect.
Later, we discovered that we’d been locked out not by our own doing, but by a managerial overlock. The situation was eventually resolved after a call to the corporate office, and I was relieved when someone higher up took the time to listen and respond with care.
But even more than the resolution, what stayed with me was the deeper lesson:
You can be soft-spoken and still stand tall. You can lead with compassion and still draw clear boundaries. You can express frustration without being unkind—and hold others accountable without guilt.
These are the lessons life keeps offering me. And they’re the same ones I offer in my work as a guide—reminding others (and myself) that we are allowed to take up space, ask questions, and say “this doesn’t feel right” without shame.
This wasn’t just about a storage unit. It was about choosing to honor my voice without abandoning my peace.
If you’ve been struggling to hold your own boundaries, to speak up, or to trust that your voice matters—you’re not alone. I’m here for conversations like these. Honest, real, and rooted in soul.
