"Three Wishes" by Liane Moriarty

Updated: Mar 16

My dear Liane Moriarty, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... She did it again, this book is funny, relatable, and oh so real. I love Liane Moriarty's books because by the end you know the characters.

This book came into my life during a really difficult time. My dad had been diagnosed with cancer and was in the hospital due to complications with chemo. As often as we could, he and I would go outside and sit in the hospital gardens. There was a little free library in the gardens where people would share and take books. My dad didn't get better, he got worse and our family was told to come and say our final goodbyes. My dad could no longer go outside with me, so my son and I went to the gardens. We looked in the little library and this book was there. I was excited because I love Liane Moriarty's books, but I knew I didn't have the concentration to read it in that moment. My dad passed away and my heart broke. On the way home from the funeral, my son was driving and he pulled this lovely book out of his back seat. Be still my heart! He had gone to the library at the hospital gardens and gotten the book and saved it for me. We had a three hour drive home, so he drove and I read aloud. This book was healing for a broken heart.

Okay, now I'll wipe my tears away and talk about the book. "Three Wishes" follows sisters who are triplets: Lyn, Cat, and Gemma. They are all so different, but in their own beautiful way. We start at a restaurant where the sisters are out celebrating their birthday. Chaos ensues and Gemma is left with a fork sticking out of her very pregnant belly! Like many good stories, we have to go back to the beginning and explain how we got here.

To be honest, I'm not going to give too much of this book away, I feel like I would ruin the joy of reading it for yourself. It is funny. It had moments that took my breath away because I couldn't believe what just happened. I cried with the characters and understood when they lost their shit and acted completely bonkers. If you are looking for a book to get lost in and characters who make your messed up life feel normal, this is the book for you. I can't recommend it enough, and I'm glad it found me right on time!
